Dear group:

I've had horrendous problems with LuCallbackProxy.exe last couple of weeks.

I e-mailed Symantec (Norton) for advice and help. They just been e-mailing back that they will get back to me. Yeah, right.

I gather that the file is supposed to be Norton’s process residing as a hidden file in C:\Program Files\Symantec\LiveUpdate. It has a brethren LUCALLBACKPROXY.EXE-29128DB6.pf in C\WINDOWS\prefetch. It’s supposedly used by the Norton suite of programs to update virus and software definitions.

I have an XP SP2 machine hooked up to the Internet by 3 Megabit DSL modem. Whenever I turn the modem on, in short time the LuCallbackProxy.exe spawns itself into 3 to 10 copies and eats up 100% of my CPU resources. This may go on for a few to tens of minutes. Then the processes disappear and I can do work again since CPU usage drops down to the normal baseline of 5 to 15%. But 5 to 30 minutes later we are back to square one. Deleting the processes manually using the Windows Task Explorer works, but only temporarily.

I wanted to know if I am dealing with the real Norton’s LouCallbackProxy.exe with perhaps a back door exploited by a hacker or with rogue software pretending to be LouCallbackProxy.exe and hiding somewhere inaccessible in the bowels of the Windows directory. So I temporarily renamed the files and waited to see what would happen. Nothing, not for a long while. So the back door is plausible. Or at least the hacker couldn’t find the files he was looking for.

But in a day or so a new problem popped up. svchost.exe popped up and started to devour 100% of my CPU time.

Any ideas on how to diagnose this problem further?

There has to be a hole in my security, though both the Microsoft Firewall and the Norton Internet Security suite report everything just honky dory.

Thanks for any ideas.

I see the same question you asked elsewhere is getting mixed responses at the link below.

I am having the same type of problem on one of my machines with nav2007. It is a problem with liveupdate.I read somewhere that this occurrs when Norton becomes damaged. I agree with Bakers and dump Norton. I just did when I reformatted this computer and what a difference it made. I am going to reformat that machine and go with NOD32 on it too. Meanwhile you may want to uninstall and then reinstall Norton which I had to do before for the same problem. If you do, use their uninstall tool to remove as much as possible before reinstalling. Yes it's not uncommon for some users to ask the same question in different forums on the internet.

Thanks guys for all the responses.

Dear XpUser:

I was looking for a solution to this problem. I happened to come across the above problem while searching for an answer to the LuCallbackProxy.exe problem this guy in an other forum was having. Since I was having the exact problem it save me time to just cut and past his problem because we were having the exact problem. I have no idea who the other person is in that forum. In fact I am not even a member of that forum. I found his forum entry via a Google search. I was not satisfied with the responses the people in that forum gave so I posted this guys statement in here hoping to get a better solution to this issue.

So XpUser to set the record straight I am not the same person who posted the message I posted.

In reponse to your response 5, when I join a forum I always us kwlakey as my user name. I never use an alias.

Now that that is cleared up what do you recommend I do about this LuCallbackProxy.exe problem I am having?

Do you think Bakers and bluejay are on the right track?

Since you are one of the more experienced members of this forum I was hoping you could give me your expert opinion.

Thanks for any help!

Dear Bakers:

I may have to "ditch the Norton crap." In the past I found Symantec used to have some good products but when I bought Norton 360 I was very disapointed.

What do you recommend for anti-virus and firewall products?

Thanks for any help!

Dear bluejay:

Reformatting my computer is not an option. It would take me too long to reinstall and set everything up again like I have it now and time is a luxury I do not have.

What is NOD32?

And you suggested uninstalling and reinstalling my Norton product. I am using Norton 360. Do think I should use a different product? I am not impressed with Norton 360.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks for all the help!
