lsass.exe - System error problem

Comment:
Suddenly my system does not start up properly - when attempting to load XP it displays:
lsass.exe - System Error An invalid parameter was passed to a service or function
If I click OK it waits a while and then attempts to reboot - same thing happens. Note I'm not sure whether the lsass is lower case L or upper case I. It was working earlier today and I'm not aware of doing anything other than internet / email.
Does anyone know of a way of fixing this (ideally without losing hard disk contents!). Any advice would be much appreciated!
