GR-13: you could also try;

1. select "Last Known Good Configuration";
start the computer and then press the F8 key when Windows begins to start.
the Windows Advanced Options menu appears.
use the arrow keys to select Last Known Good Configuration (your most recent settings that worked), and then press Enter key.

if a boot menu appears, use the arrow keys to select Microsoft Windows XP, and then press Enter.
XP restores the computer to the most recent restore point.

2. boot in Safe Mode and do a System Restore.

I have the same problem with the error message saying that lsass can't update the password because its incorrect. However, I get the same error while in safe mode, all variations of it. And going to the last boot configuration doesn't work. That's what got me into this problem. My computer was running slow and and I choose last configuration thinking that some unauthorized change had slowed it up and that's when I got the error message. Any other ideas?

GR-13 and mysteryquest: some more ideas;

* remove the password or the account user and create another.

said:
1. "I installed a second bootable drive in the PC and booted into it. Then the first (bad) drive (now labeled D:) was visible under Windows explorer.

2. I copied all "Security" files from D:/Windows/repair into D:/Windows/System32/config .

3. The drive would now boot again, but since I originally had a password at login time, all files under "My Documents" came back as "Not accessible" when trying to access them.

4. To recover the "Not accessible" files -- all my documents! -- I downloaded and ran PC Inspector File Recovery (free from Download.com) which worked great."

note: borrowageek added: "you will need to reset the permissions again for the whole drive so that you OWN the drive."

* Willis at the same forum said: "Rename the ¡°default¡± file in c:\windows\system32\config to default.old, and then copy the "default" file from c:\windows\repair into the c:\windows\system32\config."

had a different twist;
" I reinstalled windows XP on drive C: using "windows2" folder, but I could not access my documents (permission denied), but using PC File Inspector File Recovery I copied "my documents" folder to Drive D: and then installed the system recovery disk to Drive C:"

* Microsoft says this:

let us know what worked for you...
