download powermax.exe and have a blank floppy in your a: drive, then double click powermax.exe, it will create a bootable
diagnostic disk, that has the option to write zeroes to the entire drive,(! WARNING ! All data will be lost when the "Write Disk Pack (low level format)
then you'll have to fdisk and format the drive before installing windows.

If your're wanting to format your maxtor to install XP, then all you need to do is boot from your XP CDRom disk and let it take you into the setup options. Eventually you will get an option to Format your HD. If you already have XP install and are wanting to format a secondary hard drive, in XP, click the Start button, select Control Panel, Select Adminstrative Options (if you don't see Adminstrative Tools, swithc to classic view at left). From Administrative Tools, double-click Computer Management. Under Storage, double-click Disk Management. In the bottom-right-half of the screen, right-click on the drive you want to format and select Format from the menu.
