I found the source of the "Low Disk Space" problem by a search for both *.tmp and *.txt files. Most likely they will be found in the C:\windows\internet logs\ directory. It seems that all of the anti-virus and firewall software eat C drive space. In my case it was Zone Alarm. It had placed a huge number of very large log files on the C drive. The software was NOT using those files nor I. After deleting ZALogs*.txt files I regained almost 3GB of free space. Now my computer runs like new again. Good luck and happy computing.

Was this a follow-up to another post? All programs take up space. System Restore, and Windows update uninstalls, which are located in the Windows folder can also take up significant amounts of storage space.
You may also want to disable Hibernation and move the Page File to a secondary partition if you have one.

Interesting. I have two computers at home running Windows XP. Both have the directory: C:\WINDOWS\Internet Logs.

I stand corrected when I said C:\windows\internet logs\ exist only in Windows 9x.
The matter of fact is that Zone Alarm other than Windows installed and use this folder. I do not or never have ever used ZA which is why I know no such folder exists in all my PCs running XP. FYI it's not uncommon for ZA to make this folder larger and larger. Read the following thread.

P.S. You should be using ZA to delete the files in the Internet Logs folder rather than doing it outside ZA or else your ZA may not work correctly when it comes to logs management.

I just want to emphasize that disk clean up and house keeping utilities do not look for text files (*.txt). Doing a search for both temporary (*.tmp) and text files will give a clue as to which software is causing this problem. In my case, Zone Alarm was creating log text files at 107MB. There were 30 to 40 of them. That's more than 3 gigabytes of useless space occupying my C drive. Note that all other anti-virus and firewall software have received complaints that they were doing something similar to the C drive. Yes, all software will use free space on the C drive but some will behave abnormally.
