There is too much dust, you can clean it.
or you must replace it

"fan gradually starts to get louder"
Sounds like the bearing is shot in the fan , replace it as advised by Arctos & lukeles before you have more problems.

Any idea what fan a Dell Dimension 3000 would need? It is extremely loud and cleaning has not helped. I took the green airflow thing off and it calmed down, but as soon as I put it back on, it got louder and louder.

Thanks

there are several fans in your PC. one on the processor. One in the power supply. perhaps one on your video card .. then many times there are case venelation fans.

The best thing to do is to shut your pc off and unplug the power cord from the back of your machine (the one which plugs into the wall socket) Then take the cover off the side of your machine. plug the power cord back in and put your ear down close to your machine and determine which fan it is.

This is a good time to do some housecleaning while you have the cover off. Make sure you are grounded before you put your hands in your machine as static electricity can burm components out. You might need a can of compressed air to blow the little dust devils out of your PC. check all the fan blades and be certain there are no hunks of dust etc. sticking to them.. you might need a letter opener or table knife to get these little boogers off.

after you have done this plug your machine back in and see if it is still making noise .. if it is you are probably best off to replace the bad fan.. these little pancake fans are cheap .. usually about $5 from your local computer supply store.

If you feel uncomfortable you should take it to a computer tech to repair... or better yet mail it to me .. i can use the extra cash!

best of luck Frank :

If it calmed down after you took the green airflow thing off, then take it off and throw it away! Most computers don't have the dell airflow duct anyways!

Certifiably Crazy
