I'm not sure whether there are many notes experts on here but we have a problem with indexing. One of our users has a mail file over 700MB when he tries to index this locally it reaches about 700MB and says it has completed, however the indexing has not worked and the last date on the index does not change. Its almost as though there is some kind of quota system built in to this, can anyone tell me whether this is the case or whether lotus doesn't allow indexes over a certain size?

Lotus Notes has an ABSOLUTE limit of 500 MB for a notes db (I'd gather it's much less for an index)... I've seen (on rare occasions) folks who've managed to store up to 800MB - but a crash will happen, and when it does, it's not pretty - you can't access ANYTHING in that .db file (if you won't believe me, ask the head of HR at the company I used to work for - she had a .db file of 600MB when it locked up. After spending 2 hours on HOLD with Lotus, I got the answer, there is nothing that can be done - nothing is retrievable, just delete the file, and teach the user to archive). This person MUST start deleting attachments, old messages, etc. - there is no legitimate reason for keeping a message file of 700 MB in size - to say nothing of the strain it puts on system resources. Anything that hasn't been accessed in 90-120 days likely isn't isn't ever going to be accessed. Teach this user to archive, and be done with it.

Thanks Hank, these are my thoughts as well. It is just the user insists it is useful for him to have 3 years worth emails to search and that quite often goes back to these. But thanks for sharing that experience with me, it may prove useful ammunition in getting him to archive.
