Try going into safe mode and then do a system restore. And then try.

Just found this on a site, explaining how to use system restore from the recovery console on your xp disc, dunno if this will work, but if it does, it's cool!

there actually is a way to use system restore in recovery console:
- go to recovery console
- type cd \ then enter
- then cd system~1\_resto~1 then enter
- type dir then enter
when you hit <Enter> it will list all the restore points folders
like rp1,rp2........ we have to see the last restore point to copy
the file from a recent backup. if the restore points have more than
one page then u have keep on hitting the <Enter> key to view the
last restore point folder. You will have to choose the second to the
last option, if it has more than 2 RP's.
- type cd rp {the second to the last restore point no. } (Note :
Example : cd rp9, if rp9 is the second to the last restore point,
where last restore point no.=9 )
- then type cd snaphot
Now the command Prompt will look like this c:\system~1\_resto~1\rp9
\snapshot>
- type: copy _registry_machine_system c:\windows\system32
\config\system OR:
copy _registry_machine_softwarec:\windows\system32\config\software
- then type exit

let me know if it works, cheers

Use the backup of the registry, the one you made before mucking around in it. That should restore the registry to its earlier configuration...you did make one, didn't you?

Nothing seems to be working guys - advise from paz looked promising but had problem, couldnt find the ~ key???
Its on keyboard tried shift/and ctrl key but couldnt bring it up!!!!

To reinforce my original posting - i obviously deleted a wrong registry value whilst following the help from symantec's page. I followed it too the letter might i add.
I never made a back up registry - and i cant access anything other then the desktop picture in any user account!!!!
Nor will it start up within normal safe mode - just get safe mode screen and none of the basic options!!!!

I guess because i have not found an answer up to now i really have no option but to re - format the entire pc???

Is there no way of reversing the changes i had made to the registery - so that i can access windows just to copy files to cd rom???

Totally fed up

i didnt try that piece of advice myself, but just thought it may have worked.

I'd say your best bet was just just completely re-install, when you've got your whole system set up, programs and all, backup your hardrive on to cds/dvds with norton ghost, works a treat.
