Have lost the recovery disk for my Compaq Presario S5000NX. Is the only option to buy the disk from Compaq? Need to do a repair (?) as a DLL file is gone (maybe others as well), but want to keep my old files i.e. music etc. Am I on the right track here????

The recovery disk will wipe all your music files, etc. If you know the name of the dll file you can try an internet search to see if you can download it. Otherwise, best bet is to get a standard XP install disc and do a recovery.

Jane, ignore my post above. I agree with Techtony...the Recovery CD will performn a destructive system restore which means everything you have on the HD will be wiped out.

Thanks for the info. With the recovery CD can I do a "repair" vs a restore? Will that retain music files etc? If I cannot do use the repair option with the Recovery CD how do you do a repair?
