Comment:

The original OEM of my Windows XP Home was screwing up so I bought XP Pro with SP2. After installation, I haven't been able to get on the internet because it says that it "cannot find network hardware". Where did it go and how can I recover it? I am trying to get on the internet through a router but eventually want to put back the wireless connection I had on it. BTW>>>the wireless didn't work either. Any suggestions?

Did the installation complete cleanly? If it did, it should have loaded the drivers for the plug and play hardware it found. Check the hardware device manager for possible errors. Look specifically for your network adapter. I Assume your hardwired to trhe router.

It did a complete installation and I have nothing showing for network hardware. I tried to down load it from the CD but nothing is there.

Did you reset up the router after the installation?

The router is working fine because I'm using it on this computer. It just can't find the hardware needed to get on the internet.

You have me totally confused. You say it won't connect but you are using it to connect here. Am I missing something?

What happens if you go to Add Hardware and let it search for any hardware "already connected" but not yet "installed"?

per has it exactly right. You're obviously connected to the web, since you're able to load this website and post.

So, what IS the problem????

I believe he is saying he is using another computer to connect to the internet, through his router, so the router could not be the problem. But that he has another computer that cannot find its network hardware, and hence cannot get on the internet.

But please correct me if I am wrong

Jazza...you are correct. Sorry for the confusion. This is a computer that is connected through the same router that I'm trying to get the other one hooked up to. When I click on "add hardware" it looks but doesn't find anything. Is it possible that the Win XP Pro doesn't load up anything for my computer to use? If so, I would think that Dell would have that somewhere. On their resources CD they have some hardware installations, but nothing that will workfor me to get on the internet.

I downloaded the Resource CD for XP last night and I just downloaded it to my HD, then I went to Add Hardware and told it the Hardware was already attached and it came up with a list of Hardware with yellow question marks next to them. I selected each one by one and added the drivers by pointing to the files where the Resource CD loaded. The CD loaded them in folders like "network" and "audio" etc so it was relatively easy to follow.

I am not all that familiar with XP and I'm typing this from memory as best I can but I will probably have to do it again within the next few days so I'll keep an eye on this thread and let you know if I can help any further (if you don't find a solution before hand).

Note: I must add that I was surprised I had to add them all manually like that... I would imagine it is the same for you... ie you will have to add them manually.

I went into the Device Manager and saw that I had yellow question marks with yellow explanation marks over them in the ethernet controller and network controller line. I doubled clicked onthem to install them from the resource CD that I got with my Dell. After it wearches, it tells me that it cannot find the drivers so they were not installed. The resource CD says right on it that it has the drivers for the computer, but eveidently it doesn't have the ethernet or network controller.

I had the exact same thing happen to me. I let the computer search the CD and the C: drive for the drivers and it came up with nothing. However, after downloading the CD to the C: drive it created a drivers folder and lo and behold, it had created a network folder in the drivers folder and there were the drivers.

Try downloading the CD to your hard drive and then searching for a drivers folder and see if you can find a network folder. Then go to device manager and point the search to that folder and it should load.

Well unfortunately that didn't work either. Is it possible that my network adapter (ethernet) went bad?

Hmmm, ok, perhaps you could try downloading Everest so you can find out the exact details of your network hardware and then do a google search for the drivers.

Tryan...where did you download the Resource CD from? I can't download it to my hard drive from the CD I have. If I could go to a site, I might be able to do that.

I downloaded it from my Resource CD to the HD. I can't remember how now... however, I did do another clean install the other night and this time I put the CD in and let it detect my hardware... then it came to a page with a list of things like audio and network etc and they were ticked. There were also some support/help files further down the page that you could select. When I double clicked on the audio and network links that were ticked another page came up and when you scrolled down there was an extract button and then there was a page with an install button.

Can you get to those pages? Is there something to install for Network?

Thanks Tryan. I can get to those pages but for some reason after I download them, I still cannot get the computer to recognize the NIC. I think my ethernet NIC is bad. But...there is a silver lining here. I installed a wireless adapter and I can get on the internet now. I guess I'll just go with that for now but I appreciate all the help!
