Hello everyone,
I was hoping someone might be able to help me out. I went home for the holidays, and when I returned to school, I couldn't get online. My roommates are having no problems, so I know it's something to do with my computer. When I open IE, it says that I am "Working Offline," and the browser appears to be loading my homepage, but the whole window "flickers" and I hear a very fast-paced clicking sound. I have tried rebooting and checking my ethernet cable, etc., and all seems fine.
A friend of mine thinks it's a spyware/virus, but I have run a full system scan, Ad-Aware, and Hijackthis and have found nothing. What can I possibly do? Reinstall TCP/IP? Any other thoughts?
Thank you!!

Are all of your cables tightly connected? Is there a green light in the back of your computer? Try making sure the cable is good, use a different cable and see if it works. That is always the first thing to do. If that isnt it, then check your Internet Properties. It could be the TCP/IP Protocol.

I do have a green light at the back of my computer, and the cable is tightly connected. TCP/IP doesn't show any problems when I look at the properties for my network card, either.
Is a system restore my best option in this case then?

I could have sworn I typed a response...
(strange, it seems to have disappeared)...
The answwer is yes, that will probably be your easiest option.

My advice is ask your technicians if they disconeccted you for inactivity or some other reason before you start thinking of doing anything to your pc. it may be a error from the socket on the wall to there server. nothing to do with your pc or cable

Well, my cable runs directly from my computer to our router, and my 3 roommates are also connected to that router, so I don't think that would be the problem, if I understand you correctly.

okay sorry i was unsure of your setup. i thought you might be on a huge lan as part of your school. can you try this for me.
get one of your firends to download mozilla firefox setup and put it on disk for you. install it and see if you can get on the net with using that as your browser. if you can then we'll work on fixing ie.Athlon xp 2000+ @1.7

Okay, I tried installing Firefox and that doesn't work either. It says it cannot find the website I'm trying to get to. What would you recommend next?

try repairing ie.
running system file checker.
reinstalling your ethernet card.
make sure your router is letting you through.
try your pc in a different port on the router.
try reinstalling tcp/ipAthlon xp 2000+ @1.7

Could you please explain how to do the following:
try repairing ie.
running system file checker.
make sure your router is letting you through.
try reinstalling tcp/ipThanks!

well have you tried your cable in a different port in the router.
to run system file checker
hit start run then type "sfc /scannow"
without the "" and making sure a space is between sfc and /
you'll need your os disk to do this.i am unfamiliar with your router or routers in general. does it have an inbuilt firewall.?
to reinstall tcp/ip open network connections
and properties of your lan. then remove and reinstall tcp/ip will need win xp disk possibly.
just out of interest have you installed sp2 recently and turned on the internet firewall?also have you checked for spyware viruses etc

I've tried changing the router port and no luck.
The router does not have a built-in firewall, no.
And unfortunately I don't have my XP disk (my computer came with the OS already installed, and I never got a disk), so I can't do any of that stuff. Oh dear.

ok have you checked for spyware viruses?
try add/remove programs and uninstall internet explorer.

I ran a full scan using PC-Cillin and it found nothing. Then I ran Hijackthis and nothing. Then I ran Ad-Aware and it found two possible browser hijack attempts, but I'm surprised that Hijackthis did not detect them.
Also, if I uninstall IE, won't I lose all my Favorites?

Ok i haven't read all the responses yet buthas anyone thought about cheaking the driver and devices are working properly????
if you right click on my computer and then properties abd the vlick on the hardware Tab at the top of the box that gas just appeared and the click on the device manager and just dee if it isn't your network card.
Another possibilty is to remove IE componenet and then add the component back if you have problems with not having a disk you van download IE off the internet using your friends computer and CDs
Good Luck

hijack this creates a index and you choose what to delete.
