The message relates to the lack of an update or service pack. Normally if doing a reinstall you do not remove the service packs in the present version.

Solution would be to put sp2 back but why are you doing all of this?

You should be able to boot the cd via the bios and do your reinstall. You never reinstall via the loaded OS anyway.

Some Repair Shops have CD to install Internet Explorer. When
I needed one they gave it to me for free. The IE CD was for
someone else having problems.

I've never downloaded I E to a CD, maybe someone can for you. I have always used AOL and they allow some versions
to be downloaded to a CD and some like AOL 9.5 they don't.

IE 8

This is not an IE issue. The advice to remove sp2 was completely and absolutely wrong. There are a lot of misinformed folks on the web. Only follow advice when it has been verified by others.

By doing a repair install you are back at install defaults which means whatever service pack the install cd is on is the one you get. This also means if its sp1 you will have to do all the patches/updates/sp2 installs via the web.

to boot the cd via bios settings you have to do the following
1. in the bios set the boot order to cd first then hard drive. Save the settings, exit, put the xp cd in the drive and reboot
2. you should get a message like "strike any key to boot from cd" do so. Then you will boot via the xp cd.

This should help

Step 1; does the first BIOS screen show your CD and DVD drives?

What is the manufacturer and model numbers of the machine?

Yes the screen shows

FLOPPY 1.44MB 3 1/2
USB RMD-FDD Generic Storage device
IDE-O Maxtor 6Y080L0

The lite on is only a cd-rw and not a dvd.
I also got a glance that when I select the cd or the dvd when I then press enter it is saying on the black screen Floopy...before it goes to boot.
it then boots windows as normal.. and does not load the CD

I just managed to get it to boot from the CD...at least it said Boot CD ok
it then booted but the lights on the cd drive went out and it still booted\ normally so I am back to square 1...
How do I make it give me a second boot option for the HD
and then how do I save those settings.
All I get is press return or esc... nothing there to save settings etc.

It appears to be looking for a floppy drive to boot from, instead of an optical drive? Or, looking for a floppy drive after it's failing to boot from one of the optical drives?

Have you tried the Windows CD in both the Pioneer and LiteOn drives?

Is this a manufactured pc like a Dell or Hp? If not, what is the motherboard manufacturer and model?

No its not a manufactured PC...I bought it from a small shop here. I havent a clue what the motherboard info is.

It did try to boot from the CD last time... but then it gives up and starts as normal..
I need to know how to get a second boot option in Bios
and how to save the settings.

Does the bios screen you posted say boot order or something similar? Depending on bios there is either the choice of reordering the list or there is something at the side that says 1st 2nd etc.

If reorder it should look something like this

IDE-O Maxtor 6Y080L0
FLOPPY 1.44MB 3 1/2
USB RMD-FDD Generic Storage device

the other issue is if this is not a microsoft xp disk but a copy. Does it have the xp ms logo on it?

As a suggestion I would call the store you got the pc from and ask for their technical support. They may try to pressure you to bring in the pc but all you need to know is how to change the boot order. They should tell you this as a customer service gesture. In their place I would have walked you thru it since I would have known the model and bios by heart.

Its a genuin microsoft XP Disc.. not a copy.

No the bios screen just has the above listed.
At the top it says "Select first boot device"
Then the list of drives
the selct boot or cancel.
there is nothing else on there.

I will contact the shop and let you know what happens.
Thank you for all your help and for trying for me.
