Lost docs after reinstall

February 16, 2009 at 08:51:58
Specs: Windows XP

After reinstalling xp, all went well except a file of important docs is missing. Other doc files fully recovered, but this one had one difference: it's icon was a shortcut icon refering to desktop. Does this mean that when reinstalling, it was lost because desktop was wiped? Or are the files somewhere I (and winxp & google desktop search engines) can't find?
I have an old back-up from about 9 months ago, but have to try and recover recent docs.
Ran scandisk and disk check to no avail. Anyone think SpinRite might work?
Thanks in advance for any help.
And yes: I'm an idiot for not backing up before performing reinstall.

Thanks,
Bernie

Do you mean a folder is missing? Is the shortcut on the desktop? If so, where does it point? Or, does the shortcut you're looking at point to a user's Desktop? What is the exact path of the shortcut you're looking at?

Did you do a complete format and reinstall, or just a Repair?

Yes, the folder which contains all my docs, pictures and music has a shortcut only. This shortcut is not on desktop. It points to a new (and very small set of files such as docs, pics, music) instead of opening my two years worth of docs. The exact path is "C:\Documents and Settings\myname\My Documents" Including the quotation marks (!?)
I did a complete reinstall.
Thanks so much for these questions.

Thanks,
Bernie

You have not answered the other part of Jennifer's question Did you do a complete format.... If you didn't, the data may be accessible as long as it has not been written over by files with the same name in the same location.

Also if you did not do any format, STOP using the computer NOW. The less you access a hard drive after a non-boot episode; the better your chances of retrieving your data.

OK, Thanks. No I did not do a format, I just reinstalled xp. XP doesn't do some sort of formatting when it reinstalls does it? Since the other 3 users docs survive intact, I'm thinking there's got to be something going on with my docs having a shortcut only. Ideas?

Thanks,
Bernie

Look in the C:\Documents and Settings folder. What do you see?

I see the following folders:
All users
All Users.WINXP
bernie.Editing
BERNIE~1~EDI
DAUGHTER
SON
WIFE
BERNIE SHORTCUT

Files 2, 3, 4 are new since reinstall. Folder 3 bernie.Editing shows 2.7 G, but the files inside that folder are using less than 150MB. Are my lost files hiding in that folder?

Thanks,
Bernie

Show hidden files and folders. What was the login you used before?

There they are! In a hidden folder I didn't see before. Thanks so much for all your help. Nice to be part of a "happy ending". Now to get a scheduled backup going.
Cheers,
Bernie

Bernie
