Whenever I re-format using my emachines recovery disk it backups my system files in case I need to un-format.I guess thats a good thing in some instances but i lose 2.7gb(win+sp1a+updates) of disk space.any suggestions on how to avoid this or restore what has been backed up would be greatly apreciated

Well the best way to remove it would be Emachines support, else delete the partition the recovery info is stored. If you could tell me where it is stored, I might be able to help better, mail me at satya_ramachandran@adp.com

The restore CD creates a hidden partition that is not accessible from Windows. You will not be able to configure it for access. It is there so the restore can find the files it needs if you create the restore that way. It is not the same as creating a partition and placing backups there yourself.
