i couldnt reply to 'old' msg..sooo... i had this problem of a 'lost desktop' too. all i had was the windows wallpaper, no start menu. this happens sometimes when i run spybot s+d, and reboot. there's a program called shell enabler that will put the explorer.exe shell entry back in the registry [as well as use other shells]. you can ALSO edit the registry [winlogon\"and put it back in. well, this happened today, and none of those things worked, even though those things have worked in the past. here's how i fixed it today; in winxp, reboot, + hold down f8 + select last known good config that worked. + pray to god you dont have to reinstall. enjoy winblows, - MRoblivious1bmf
