Comment:

I accidentally closed the running process of IEXPLORE.exe in my windows task manager. I lost everything off my screen except my screen saver.

I have no idea how to restore this.

I'm not sure if it makes a difference, but in my Task Manager in my New Task drop down list I have "C:\Documenrs and Settings\User\Start Menu\Programs\Internest Explorer.lnk" . When I try to run it I get an error message saying that the program has failed to initialize properly.

Also in the New Task list is "C:WINDOWS\toolbar.exe" which fails to do anything at all.

Any idea how I restore things?

aliasego, To correct that problem type:

explorer.exe

in the New Task (Run..) box.

When I typed that in I got message box labelled:

explorer.exe - Application Error

The application failed to initialize properly (0xc0000005). Click on OK to terminate the application.

You can relaunch IE via Task Manager's "new task" button by browsing to C: ⇒ Program files ⇒ Internet Explorer ⇒ IExplore.exe.

But something tells me what you lost was Explorer.exe (Not to be confused IExplore.exe) and to relaunch that via Task Manager's "new task" button, you really need to browse to C: ⇒ Windows ⇒ Explorer.exe or simply log off or restart the machine.

Goodluck!

I get the same error message when I tried that method. The restart didn't chance anything either.

You might want to try system restore from safe mode or safe mode command prompt ASAP.

aliasego, Go to the link below and scroll down to line 195(right column) and download the "Restore Desktop Icons and Taskbar" .vbs file. Save it to your hard drive (you may want to right click and use Save Target As). Double
click the vbs file. You will be prompted when the script is done.
"NOTE: If your anti-virus software warns you of a "malicious" script, this is normal if you have "Script Safe" or similar technology enabled. These scripts are not malicious, but they do make changes to the System Registry".

Have you tried a System Restore to the closest date prior to this problem?

Thanks, but the scure system restore did nothing, and the program(s) from Kelly's ran but didn't affect anything.

I'll try my recovery CD now (luckily I don't have much to back-up).
