Losing Restore Points

XP Keeps losing my restore points. I get periodic crashes -- it just shuts down and reboots without cause. When I look for restore points, it only saves them for a day or so. Sometimes longer, even a few weeks, but then they disappear.
Under control panel I do have it set to use maximum disk space, which is like 9157 MB.
Summary: I am not up on norton too much but someone mentioned that their virus protection was causing them to lose restore points because it was taking snapshots of their system and over riding the system rest...
