Just wondering if anybody could tell me where all my RAM is going? I Have 512 MB currently installed and whenever I look I always have 200 or less MB available. I've gone into msconfig and disabled all startup items, and services but still could only get as high as 300 MB available and by doing that all my programs would run extremely slow. Any advice as to whats happening to all my RAM? Thanks in advance

Possibly spyware. Run ADAWARE and SPYBOT-SEARCH AND DESTROY.

I guess you have not run system tools such as Disc Clean up adn disc defragmenter for a long time. You probably have a lot of applications running on your machine that you do not need. Also there might me some that consume your resources and you do not even know about their existance. (spyware et...)

hmmm this is happening with a freshly reformated system. Does spyware stay on the computer after a reformat of the HDD?

Windows uses as much ram as it needs. If you still have 200 mb available then that's fine. Xp needs all of 128 or more just to function so any open app will use more. Typically if you close an app and open another windows will assign a different ram address for the new app so it can restart the previous app faster if you go back to it. It will re-use this previously assigned ram if it needs to. 512mb is a good amount of ram to have as it minimises the need for use of swap file on HDD. By all means keep an eye on your memory usage and if it consistently drops to less than 50mb available then you may have something to be concerned about.
