hey guys,

strange things goin on with my parents' computer lately... i just formatted and re-installed xp and had to courage to try sp2 for them. well it may have nothing to do with it, but i keep losing the internet connection after a certain given period of time. all the wires are ok (im no newb) and i renew an ip with dchp through ipconfig and still i get nothing. once i reboot everything is fine until that certain period of time passes and the net connection dies.

any suggestions ideas? i uninstalled all hotfixes to no avail :(

thanks guys!

I have the same problem...I've tried shtting off the Windows firewall, can still renw my ip adress, I made a separate partition for Windows XP, and my first update was a couple windows updates, while dloading the 266MB file straight from MS. I then installed SP2, and this problem popped in.

Now, don't laugh, I'm doing this sheerly for work purposes...

My system is a PII 450 w/MMX, 256MB ram, 16MB voodoo 3000 AGP, 40GB 7200RPM HD, 12 gigs set aside for XP...My net connection is a Cable connection thru Shaw, straight into my ethernet card...

Can't blame hardware on this one, or ISP, or anything, due to the sheer fact that my windows 2000 partition works FINE...perfectly...lol

I've noticed one file asking for permission on my firewall (both windows and ZA Pro, using ZA right now)...WUTR.exe...however, i've taken permission from it, and given it to it...STILL WON'T WORK...this is an interesting issue...hope we can figure it out

I've been working on it for a while now...discovered a couple things things...

1)disabling/re-enabling the Local Area Connection in Network Connection - It brings the net up, but still not for long...

2)This one's in testing, but I think I can still ping google.ca and suff like that...so we're STILL technically connected...

3)This error is most defiantly caused by windows...mainly beacuse, watching my modems activity lights, when I'm trying to access a page, shows them not doing anything...basically the conn. between my nic and the Cable Modem isn't there half the time...plus, on the status screen of my connection, I'm still sending/reciveing packets...just not receiving many at all...as in 1000/200 ratio

4)I've tried both enabling/disabling TCP/IP filtering, doesn't do it...I discovered it was on for some reason...heh...

I doubt thi'sll have anything to do with it, but I have the Client for microsoft networks and File/Printer sharing UNBOUND...aka not linked to my eth connection...

Any ideas in that rant, will greatly help...Sinstone's experience with uninstalling SP2 seems to point to somethnig larger at play here...

ok try this as ive seen this error before but mainly with usb broadband modems not sure if it works for nic's. goto device manager and select your nic or usb root hub that the modem is connected to r/click choose properties then powermanagment tab and untick allow the computer to turn off this device to save power.
