I am trying to create another partition. I currently have 1 primary 1 extended and 1 logical partition. My first approach was to try to create another, logical drive. I have resized the existing logical drive in-order to free up some space. When I tried to use Windows Computer Management, Disk Manger to create the new partition it is only giving me the option to create a primary drive. I then went into Partition Magic and it is only giving me the option to create a logical drive. What is going on. I have had problems with Partition Magic in the past and would prefer to use Windows Disk Manager if possible.

If your extended partition is larger than the existing logical drive within it, then disk management should let you create further logical drives within it (I use the term logical drive, because they are subsets of an extended partition. There are only 2 partition types, primary and extended).

If the current logical drive uses up all the extended aprtition, but there is unpartitioned space on the disk, disk manager will let you create only a primary partition (you can have up to 4 partitions, either all primary or 3 primary and one extended. The extended partition can be subdivided into logical drives).

Partition Magic should allow you to restructure your drive space however you want.

Hi
Just trust Disk Management.
I don't know what that other guy was talking about because I used Disk Management to split my 80 gig HD into 7 partitions.
BootitNG claims it can make 256 partitions.

i always thought that you could have one primary and one extended. the extended could be divided into many logical drives. i would support partition magic. needless to say, back up as much as you can before doing either option.
