I recently had windows 2000 with the auto logon for admin. When I upgraded to XP Pro i dont get the welcome prompt to click the icon, it automatically signs me into the admin account. I checked the welcome screen and it still doesnt work. How do I turn off the Auto log on for the built in admin account? The account doesnt have a icon when you go to the welcome screen. Any ideas???

What you do is goto control panel, click on user accounts. From there click on the "Change the ways users log on or off" button. From there check the first box. Restart to see if it works. That should fix your problem

I tried that it didnt work... I was also told to remove the password option but I never had one... It was just bybassed in windows 2k and now there isnt a option in xp.
any other ideas?

Yeah I click the welcome screen and the fast switching... is there something I can do that maybe im not doing in the CONSOLE TREE? (IN ADMINISTRATIVE TOOLS)
I even check the box to make the password expire and that didnt work either.

Did you click the apply button.Beleave it or not that is the biggest mistake i make.I put all the changes in then i have to re do it.

try this site it has most answers to my questions..M$ Tech site

Goto CONTROL PANEL -- USER ACCOUNTS
Look at the bottom for the Administrator account, does it say "Password Protected" underneath it? If it doesn't, that means that there IS NO PASSWORD associated with that account, and thus, will result in the automatic logging in as Admin.
To fix:
Click on the ADMINISTRATOR account and then CHANGE PASSWORD and set a password for the account. APPLY the changes. Now, do you want to use the WELCOME SCREEN or no? You don't have to, you can use the standard logon prompt from Windows NT/2000. If you would like to use it, go back into USER ACCOUNTS and then click on "CHANGE THE WAY USERS LOG ON" and check the box that says "USE THE WELCOME SCREEN", then click APPLY OPTIONS. Restart the computer and it should bring up the WELCOME screen with the Admin account shown, click on it and it will ask for your password.
The other thing you may have to do is create a second account beside the ADMIN account so that there is a second account option listed. This will help in letting Windows XP know that there are multiple people logging on and not all Administrator access.

If you have only one log in user you dont get the choice Xp will boot to the admin user set up a new user and give that user limited access and the next time you boot youll be given a choice who get's to log on Password for the admin account is a good idea but I think it's not needed

I have the same problem, every time my computer starts, xp logs on as the administrator. I tried setting up a password and creating other accounts, clicked apply button, and the same thing. Every boot up the administrator account takes over. I even tried re installing xp, nothing! Please input any comments, thanks.
