Lockup after installing drivers off XP disc

May 27, 2009 at 01:35:32
Specs: Windows XP, AMD64 X2/4g
Hi,
I hope you can help me, this is my first build, my tech and I have parted ways. I would say I am good with computers and this went really well for me until it came to the bios and the o/s install. I was told I could put XP Home Upgrade back on this machine and use my 98 SE version too and when I tried, my machine keeps hanging up after installing the drivers from the XP CD. I did not install the 98 cd yet. My hard drive did have it on there but I tried to dump it, I think I did it I will tell you how when you respond to me. Please help, I am going crazy I hope I did not ruin anything.
Thanks.

What OS are you attempting to install?

What drivers are you talking about? You should probably start by listing the system specs.

If you plan on running both 98 & XP in a dual boot configuration, you should install 98 1st. And if you want 98 to be able to see files on the XP partition, both partitions will need to be formatted as FAT32. You're not gonna be able to install 98 with 4GB RAM though. You'll have to lower the RAM amount to 512MB or less, do the install, then edit the vcache settings in the system.ini file.

You'd probably be better off installing XP & running 98 as a virtual machine.

Thanks for replying, I want to install XP, but my tech told me that somewhere along the way the installation would ask me for the previous version of windows. I have not got to that point, that is where my machine keeps hanging up. I am assuming that the cd is installing drivers as I am watching something load across the screen, when it says windows is starting now it hangs up. Like I mentioned I am not good with this. Thanks again.

What the tech meant is that you are trying to install XP using XP Upgrade CD and Win 98 SE full installation CD as the qualifying product, correct?
