locksup on shutdown & reboot

Specs: Windows XP
My lappy locks up on shut down and reboot.
I called Tech Support and they said I needed to do a recovery. So i did. But its still doing it.
What do I do. Does it need a new Batter or AC cord , do i just put in the trash now or use it as a over sized paper weight ????? Because at the point i am at a loss for any ideal as to what to do for it and Tech support is clueless!!

... I had a laptop that used to do that but not @ shutdown and restart, mostly the in between stages ie when it was meant to be running it used to freeze up!

... it turned out to be the harddrive that had become dislodged from its fitting, pushing it back "home" cured that info here

... it might be worth trying this SuperFast Shutdown I use it all the time (years) and never had any problems with it.
