Comment:

I have a Dell Dimension 8300 from 2003. Lately, I've been having a strange problem. If I leave it alone for about 1 hour, once in a while I will come back, and the Screen Will Say, this computer has been locked and can only be unlocked by Dimension/owner. And the boxs are grayed out, so I can't even type anything in them. Why is it doing this?

Disable the screen saver password feature on your computer.

You computer is locking up to save power and for security. Just disable it in the Control Panel.

Bill Gates needs a seperate computer at the IRS just for his own taxes, because he has so much money. Yet, Microsoft makes crap stuff.

First try this:

Start->Control Panel->User Accounts->Change the way users log on or off

Make sure "Use the Welcome screen" is checked. That way, it won't show the classic logon screen, and you might possibly just need to click on your username again.

Then go to your Display Properties (where you can view your screensaver), and see if "On resume, display Welcome screen" is checked. If so, un-check it.

You should always have a password on your account. You can set up Windows to automatically log you on when you boot the computer up if you don't want to type your password in each time. That way, you can protect your computer's data (credit card numbers, etc) from prying eyes. Also, there are people who scan computers on the internet trying to find computers that are poorly protected...

Unless if you're using a "limited" account to do your daily routines, and have your Administrator account (not the built-in one, but your very own) password-protected...you don't want people to be installing virus-infested programs through an administrator-enabled account
