Lock up booting windows

Specs: Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition, 2.171 GHz / 447 MB
My desktop has started locking up lately. When this happens it quits sending video to the monitor and my cdrom will not eject. The PC light will still be on when this occurs. I have to cut the pc off and back on. Usually nothing happens when I turn the PC back on. I turn if off and back on again and it will start to boot. When it gets to the Windows screen the monitor goes out and it does not respond again. I decided to try and reinstall the Master Boot record. After installing the Master Boot record it starts working again. I usually have to go through these steps about every 2 days.

" 2.171 GHz / 447 MB", indicates it is probably a few years old & the warrenty is up? If this is true, open the side of the case & blow it out with a can of compressed air. Blow out good where ever there are fans located. the fact that it worked after restoring the MBR, could be coincidence but, I guess the HD could be on it way out. back up on cds anything you don't want to lose just in case. How did you "reinstall the Master Boot record."??

I have already tried the compressed air. I installed the MBR with the restore DVD. It happened again today. I tried turning it off and on several times. After installing the MBR again it booted up fine. I have another hard drive I may try to use it. That should help eliminate the hard drive.
