Hi Does anyone know where the wall papers are stored on the HDD? I had this pic that I had set as my wall paper. I edited the original pic and accidently saved it on the original. Now the only copy of the original is the one on the wallpaper. Where would it be stored that I can recover the original? Thanks

Try Right click Desktop, then Properties, then Desktop tab, then "Browse..." button.
That should display the location of the currently displayed picture.

Seems to me that if you edited the original pix, then the wallpaper will change to the edited one when you restart you computer. ????

I think that a picture file that in any other folder, other than My Pictures, will not be shown as a picture, but as another Icon.
Or may be that it is not shown because it was edited.
If you edited it, and saved as the original, then original is gone. -kiss bye-bye ?? :(

Since the original pic is still displayed as the wallpaper, it should be stored somewhere on the PC, as a background file?

Another way would be... back at the Desktop tab, in the Background list your current picture file name is highlighted. Do a SEARCH for that file name.

Maybe a hidden file ??
In Windows Explorer or Control Panel, click Tools in the Menu bar, click Folder Options, click View tab, in Advanced Settings list, find and check mark "show hidden files and folders"
while your at it, uncheck "hide extensions for known file types" -------------- Running out of ideas. At 61, this brain needs more thinking time. Will check back some other time.

Hello Gruffy-
I have done some more checking on my Compaq computer. I have found that my wallpaper is at three locations:
My Pictures, C:\WINDOWS, and C:\WINDOWS\Web\Wallpaper
That is about it as for extra information.

Chuck,
Perhaps this article may give Gruffy further clues. Beside BMP, the wallpaper extension could be JPG, GIF, JPE, DIB, PNG, and even HTM. If nothing else work, try look into the folder of the editor program used.
