Loading WinXP on CompaQ Presario 70

Hi, I have a compaq presario 7000 (approx 2 years old) with Windows ME preloaded on this. Now I want to switch to WinXP. However I have got the origional Win XP and tried to laod the OS after formatting the disk. It shows the loading function and loads the OS to an extent, but after the installation is shown as complete and it reboot the maching it gives an error of wrong e:\asms E: is my CD drive.
Please tell me is there a restricition that I can not load win XP on Compaq Presario 7000 and if not.. please suggest as to how to do it.
and the fact that this is a PIII with 128MB RAM and a WINME OS suggests that your computer technology may date back to 2001 which was about 5 years ago.
