I have a new machine with a virgin XP Home installation. It booted once, and when I unchecked the box allowing unsolicited downloads from Microsoft, hal.dll corrupted and refused to work. I booted from the recovery CD and did a complete re-install. Now I can't install any software (except Office 2000), as it reports "cannot find shell.dll" which is in \windows\system as version 3.10.0.103 and 5kb. Any clues as to :ˆ's wrong, and how can I fix it?
