All my file have the "lnk" at the end when I click on a program I get the error message
This file does not have a program associated with it for performing this action. Create an association in the
folder option control panel.

toopay, Go to the link below and scroll down to Line 12 (right column) and download the "Link File Fix for Windows XP". Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. If that doesn't correct the problem then try Line 12 (left column) "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP".

Link File Fix for Windows XP

Have you tried a System Restore in SAFE mode?

toopay, You're one of many having this problem recently. I wish I had a definite fix but try going into Folder Options/File types, scroll down to REG and hilite it, click the Advanced button, click the Set Defaults button. then try the reg fix you downloaded.

when you open a program, and then go to tool and then folder options you see a list of all the open with association extension. can you tell me if in yours do you have "exe" and "reg" listed.

I just added the "Reg", but the "EXE" is not listed.
Is there some place that one can get a copy of the Registered File Types:

toopay, Now that you added REG to File Types did you try to run any of the reg fixes? I don't know of anywhere you would find a copy of Registered files as each system is different. EXE is not on my list either but I have no problems with any file associations whatsoever.

Try this;

Go to the link below and scroll down to Line 12 (right column) and download the "Link File Fix for Windows XP". Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it and answer yes to the import prompt. If that doesn't correct the problem then try Line 12 (left column) "EXE (lnk and regfile) Fix for Windows XP".
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm

then when you download the file extract it to the desktop.
when you click it and it asks how to open it choose selecting the application yourself.
when you browse go to windows and select "regedit"
the file will now merge and solve your problem you may have to reboot and merge.
you also might have to go to each shortcut and reset the icons.

This worked for me

In the case where nothing worked, I found that when I used the .com trick and booted in safemode then I could open regedit, then I had to give permission to HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT
to the "everyone group" and just to be on the safe side I also added the main computer users name and gave full control. High light HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT then select "edit" then "permissions", highlight the "users" group and make sure that "read" is checked. If you don't see any names then click "Add", "Advanced", then "Find Now" then select the main user and click OK. Now give the new user full control in the check box.
