I was running my IntervideoWinDVD with no trouble. When I started my computer this morning, all my programs have LNK attached to them and I cannot open my programs. How can I fix this?

Irish4444, Go to the link below and download the "LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix" zip file. Download the ZIP and open it. Extract the REG file to your hard disk and double click it. Answer yes to the import prompt.

LNK (Shortcut) File Association Fix

If that don't correct the problem download the "EXE File Association Fix" at the same link and follow the instructions above.

Follow up to davew1210's question

Your .exe file associations are probably corrupted as well just as mine were. You may have figured the problem out already but incase you haven’t go to the URL Tufenuf suggested –
http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm
Read the Note at the top of the page, the one about using the Command Prompt window to open Registry Editor and than try importing the REG files – worked for me, hope it helps

When you double click on the file included in the zip folder it will ask you to tell it what program to use with the file. Select "Select program From List" and when the new window opens click browse and then navigate to c:\windows and double click on regedit.exe. I know what your thinking this isn't going to work because it's an exe file but when you click okay the regestry settings in the file will be imported and you can be on your way. Hope this helps everyone. :D

Hello eveybody,

I have the same problem. I can not open a .reg file, I can not add the registry value either. I even tried the suggestion of Alcoholic and followed the intructions on the top of the page of http://www.dougknox.com/xp/file_assoc.htm in order to import reg files. NOTHING!
Is there anything else that I could do?

Thanks
Michy

I too have the same problem. I ran the exe association fix which fixed my system tray and start programs all programs icons however my desk top icons are still not back to normal. The only difference I see is that I am no longer getting the Windows cannot open this file message now I get the hour glass for a second and nothing. I check the Task Manager and the program in not running.

I also tried the lnk association fix but that made no difference.

Please Help :-)
