Hi,
I have bought a Linksys Wireless-G ADSL Gateway and a Linksys wireless-G PCI adaptor to put in my sons computer in his bedroom.
I have installed the PCI card and it is active, the gateway is connecting to the internet OK(must be because I'm typing this).
The problem is the PCI adaptor will not communicate with the gateway, does anybody have any idea what on earth I have done wrong.
Any help or ideas are gratefully appreciated.
Many thanks in advance.
Steve.

I cannot give a specific answer, just some information.

For some basic ideas:

In Windows HELP, click Index, then type:

walkthroughs

Below that double click "Networking"

Tells all about how to connect computers,
and network setup.

Thanks for that Chuck, however I have been through all the microsoft help pages and they dont help. The PCI adaptor is scanning for a network but it wont pick up the gateway for some reason.

I dont know if this helps, but I have just run Everest and both the gateway and the PCI adaptor are detected as network adaptors.

When you click on Network Connections, what if any wireless network does it list? Unless you changed the name, it should be default. Obviously the name must be the same for all. Did you possible encrypt the PC wireless side of the link and not the router side? Just a couple of thing that would cause your problem.

Only other thing I can say is that Linksys is good for Tech Support. Go to

http://www.linksys.com

and register your new products. Then seek Tech Support. They have a 24/7 toll free phone support. Or e-mail at

support@linksys.com

Register products first.

Hi Clyde,
When I open wireless network connections the box is empty, saying there is no network.
The PCI adaptor says Ad-hoc network not found.

I see it is down too.
Just another thought, from a non expert.
During the running of the Network Setup Wizard on the Host computer, did you make the floppy
Network Setup Wizard and run it on the Client computer ?
I think the floppy gives all the network data to
the Client.

Anyway, do the Tech Support thing.

Did u make sure that brodcast of SSID is turned on? If it is disabled your sons computer wont find the network. To change this go to the router settings. (defalt is typing in 192.168.1.1 to ur adress bar)After it finds the network you can play around with this but for setup, it is much easier for the SSID to be brodcasted. Also, one it works think about enabling encrition so others can not find you network.

Lots of folks want to help, but need some feedback once in a while. We still don't know if you ran the Network Setup Wizard successfully. It is a waste of time and effort without that having been completed, including the nwsetup step. If it were mine, I'd turn everything off. Reset the router. Use control panel>hardware>device manager and uninstall the Network Adapter, let Windows find it and reinstall it. Run the Network Setup Wizard, being careful to select the correct options, identify those resources to be shared and enjoy.

Yes Clyde you are quite right. Did not realise i had not said about running set up wizard.
I will follow your advice about re-setting and uninstalling, however, it will be tomorrow now.
Thanks for all your help.

I find that people make too much of setting up a router and using a remote wireless PCI card, etc. Most of the time it is a simple matter of configuring the router, and making sure the network setup has been carried out properly, as previously noted.

Open IE and type in the URL 192.168.1.1. No need for http etc. When the next screen comes up asking for a user name and password, ignore user name, and type 'admin' (without quotes) as password. Then make sure the proper setup settings are entered according to what Linksys on their website recommends. Then try to connect. You may have to reset your modem, and you may have to try this a couple of times. But eventually you will be able to connect.
