I just install the linksys wireless accesspoint and configured it. However my notebook uses XP and when I installed the linksys pcmcia card the drivers on the cd were not for xp. I checked the website for updated drivers and found both firmware for the WAP and updated drivers. There is no mention of XP support on linksys website. The drivers I used said they were not digitally signed but I used them anways since I couldn't find any that were. The card works. However my range sucks. It bounces up and down. I tried diffierent frequencies. I even placed the notebook next to the wireless access point and it sometimes says 80% and jumps to 100%. I was wondering if any of you have the linksys wap and how your range is. My house is small so it shouldn' be a problem. I don't use any 2ghz devices. Are the drivers the problem? Should I go get an XP card from another vendor. I'm sure the WAP will work with other cards. Thanks for your help I'm stumped.

Hello Brian:

The Linksys WAP 11 is problematic in any OS and not great. The cards are even worse, bordering on unusable at times. If you just bought this stuuf and can return it to the vendor do so immediately.

If not, you will still need a new card for the laptop. For that, the ORiNOCO Gold is the only game in town.

That said, when you say your range "sucks" do you mean to say that you see a noticeable difference in browsing speed? With all of the SOHO wireless gear the manufacturer's utilities showing signal strength are notoriously inaccurate. A better test is to simply dload a large file, roam and see how transfer speed changes.

Good Luck!

Thanks for your help! The linksys WAP is ok. I bought an orinoco gold card and it can show a link of 100% most of the time. However, I still think the WAP does not have enough watts to deliver enough signal. I have tested other wireless lan stuff at work and could use it all over in the warehouse and even outside. With the linksys 100ft seems to be the limit. That's line of site..I had to bring the unit upstairs. I guess I am going to have to return it if I can. Thnaks again for your help. I knew it couldn't be me because I test these units all the time but never a linksys.

I just read your e-mails after trying unsuccessfully to hook up the system using a new Dell notebook with XP Pro and had no luck either. I think I will return everything ASAP and look for another wireless system. If anyone has any suggestions please let me know!

I hooked up the BEFW11P1 WAP/router/print server to my XP desktop and downloaded new firmware for IPSEC and get access to Internet and VPN.

However, I am now installing WDT11 PCMCIA cards in Win95 and Win2000 machines, with no luck so far.

I tried Infrastructure mode with same IDs and no luck. Thinking maybe firmware upgrade for the cards as well?

Hopefully, I won't run into range problems mentioned earlier.

I had to start over, what system would anyone recommend? Compaq, etc.?

UPDATE:

I bought a wireless networking card for windows XP and moved all the other card I bought to Windows 2000. The network works and the XP can see the wireless access point. However, my range still sucks. For large file transfers I still use cat5.

Hello. I am connecting to my neighbor's Linksys WAP. I am connecting using the Linksys USB adaptor. My signal is horrible and sometimes it doesn't find a signal. Have you had any luck using an Orinoco adaptor with the Linksys WAP? Or are there other USB adaptors that get better reception than the Linksys one even with a Linksys WAP?
