Links won't open in Outlook Express

I've had XP home edition for 4 months now and love it. Have had zero crashes. I've also been using IE and Outlook express 6 with no problems - until today... suddenly, when i recieve an email with links in it, it won't open the link - it opens a new browser page, but opens nothing and then acts as if it's trying to download something. I've run my virus scan and it came back clear. I've rebooted and searched Microsofts help sites to no avail. Anyone else have any suggestions?
