limited or no connectivity
when trying to connect by ethernet directly to Internet - tried DSL, tried wireless, tried cable, to no avail - any ideas?

Check blackviper.com for services required.
Please post back within 24 hours or I will delete the post from my follow up list. Thanks. It would be a courtesy if you would post back and let us know if the fix worked or not.

Hi! What is your setup like. Are you going through a router or directly to the Cable modem?
From the looks of your email addy it appears you are with mediacom cable DSL.
Limited or no connectivity can mean several things.
Bad ethernet cable.
Not getting DHCP service.
Or certain services aren't running.
Bad network card.
Drivers for the card not properly installed.
And prolly a few others that I haven't thought of.I would venture to say that the problem is that the DSL service provide is looking for a mac address that it is no longer seeing and thus is refusing to talk to your PC.
I would give them a call and let them know the situation and they will tell you how to find your mac address on your ethernet/network card. They will have to input that address into their settings on their end. You should be able to surf after they do that and you reboot.
Hope this helps.

So when you asked the folks providing the cable and the different folks providing dsl and the differnt folks for wireless...what did they tell you was the problem?
and what do you mean "limited connectivity"?

Limited or no connectivity is a message windows XP gives after installing Service Pack 2. To resolves this issue, go to CONTROL PANEL, NETWORK CONNECTIONS and right click on your LAN icon and select PROPERTIES. under the GENERAL tab at the bottom, Disable the box that says NOTIFY ME WHEN THIS CONNECTION HAS LIMITED OR NO CONNECTIVITY. This should take care of the problem, similar to the one I experienced.

I am getting this error now. It is not corrected by disabling the 'Notify me..' check box. Interestingly the IP address my network cards gets is not valid for my network (home) it is 169.254.113.88 and it should be a 192.168.1.X number. I can manually set the network card and connect to other PCs but cannot get out to the internet (firewall is turned off)
Any suggestions?
Thanks
