Dear people,

Ran into a problem with XP Pro. I created a limited account as I don't like surf on the internet using my admin account.
Now, with my limited account, it's not possible to start Windows Messenger, unless I explicitly do a right mouse click, select Run As and set the credentials to the admin account.
Please tell me there a way to run Windows Messenger in my limited account. Otherwise, it makes not to much sense to create a limited account.

Thanks for any help,

PAtrick REijnen

Good point PAtrick, I was also unable to play online games from a limited account.

I hope someone has an answer.

I came online just now to post a problem like this. It turns out that you can't run certain programs on accounts other than the one you installed those programs with. For instance, I installed AOL on my admin account. All the other users can run the program, but it crashes because it can't access the main.idx file, which my admin can.

For starcraft, my admin can save games and have the progress recorded. The other users on my account can play starcraft, but starcraft won't record the change (level won, etc.) And if they try to save a game, it crashes.

I can't even set the "run program with another user's credentials". I'm starting to think that every user who wants to use a program will have to install their own copy (if i get microsoft office, or some other large program...it's going to suck when all of my users have to install their own copy on a single computer just to get it to work right).

To fix your messenger problem, just install the software onto your limited account (although, I'm not sure if limited account users can install programs in the first place). I'm on my admin account since it's the only one that can run the AOL software :(

David,

Your point above does not hold for Office XP. After installing it as admin, it works for every limited user without any problem.

AS for ICQ: it sucks. I created an account with admin rights. (see also messenger below), Configured it completely and changed the account to a limited account. After that, ICQ stopped working for the limited account.

As for Windows Messenger: see the points below, stolen from another newsgroup. At least the one with the account setup as admin and then limiting it to a limited account works for me. But you have to setup your account as admin first.

Stolen :-)
"This is a known issue, and that patch doesn't deal with it.

What you need to do is uninstall Messenger, then install Messenger 4.5, setup the accounts,
and re-upgrade to Messenger 4.6.

To uninstall:
Close down Messenger (right click the messenger icon in the notification area/system tray and
click close). Then click the start button, then click Run and type in (copy-paste if you
like):
RunDll32 advpack.dll,LaunchINFSection %windir%\INF\msmsgs.inf,BLC.Remove
Then click OK.
Messenger will then be uninstalled. For more detailed instructions and screenshots, go to,
http://messenger.jonathankay.com/problem.aspx?ID=7

Then download and execute the 4.5 installer:
http://download.microsoft.com/download/windowsmessenger/install/4.5/wxp/en-us/mmssetup.exe"

And:
"1. Delete all Limited accounts (only have 3 - my kids)
2. Re-create accounts as Administrator.
3 Logon to each account in turn.
4. Create Messenger entry, and MSN explorer entry.
5. Logon and Sign in so as all entries and links are activated.
6. Close down and Log off the accounts
7. From my Administrator account change users each in turn to Limited.

If I restart after this process I can immediately logon to any limited
account and have full Messenger and MSN explorer access. Also I add any
additional users I don't need to uninstall 4.6 etc."

Hope this helps a bit,
PAtrick
