My daughter is begging me to let her install the freeware version of LimeWire on her machine.
I'm looking for expert opinions on this app. If it's OK, are there any settings I should be extra aware of?
BTW We connect through a router that has a built-in firewall if that makes it any more "OK".
Thanks!

The firewall will not help if she downloads a file with a virus. Have her check 'EVERYTHING' she downloads with an anti-virus progarm. And keep in mind anti-virus programs are not infallible, especially if you don't do the updates every day.

Limewire advertises that they are spyware free. Most programs like this have some spyware in them. Like ham 30 says, a router will not protect you from a virus. Whenever you use P2P programs you ask for trouble. I use Limewire myself, but I'm very cautious of what I do on it. Never downlaod from any servers that say they use T1 and T3 connections. It's all garbage and points you right so some remote site. Screen everything she downloads. I worked on a lot of teenager's computers and I couldn't screw them up that bad if I wanted to. Good Luck.
Keep Smiling
It makes them think you're up to something...

um... i used limewire for long while and i never got a single virus off of it. If its only for music purposes then let her select that she wants audio files only and i'm 99.99% sure u cannot get a virus this way since it has to be a executable file

Limewire is full of spyware aps like most p2p programs. there is also the legality issue to consider, getting caught downloading copyrighted material could result in a heavy fine if not worse so you should consider that also.

It is probably one of the better p2p programs, But as stated above, be sure to virus scan every download before opening it. I use Norton antivirus and it scans while downloading and stops or advises before the infection. If you use p2p you WILL at sometime, get a virus loaded downloaded.

Forgot to mention the consequences of downloading copyrighted songs, etc. You could end up in court defending yourself against copyright piracy.

If you use Comcast, AOL or any other big name ISP there is a very good chance you will end up in court.
Only Verizon does not release logs to the RIAA and is in complete defiance of the supreme court order to do so. All the other ISP's do without exception.

Does a local TWC/RoadRunner service provider count as a "big name ISP"?
P.S. Thanks to you all for the prompt responses.

i thought they were going after people who share the music more than who downloads and doesnt share. could be wrong tho
Please keep us updated so we know if we helped you or not.

when my granddaughter was a senior in high school one of her friends actually got caught downloading Copyrighted songs and was taken to court and fined $60,000.00 but ended up paying $15,000.00, Is it worth it? you will have to decide.

Well, installing P2P apps, as in the act itself isn't necessarily bad. Limewire, Shareaza, Cabos, etc. are all good clients without any spyware. Limewire, however, has decreased performance due to its non-Free/free nature.
And yes, downloading copyrighted music is bad.

Hello, Umm i had a few questions..I was wonder how they track you down? would it be by ur IP Address? and If soo...why not just download a Internet Optimizer that changes your IP address? And how exactly Do you ge tthe message from RIAA saying your being pressed with charges?
My Web page wont close!I have to Ctrl+Alt+Del and end task the Web pages. Everything else would close but not the web related pages.
