Just bought a Lexar 128MB jump drive. Seems to work fine.
Question:
Do I need to disconnect using the taskbar icon saying "safely remove hardware" for the Lexar or just pull it out? Either way seems to work fine without any probs. Just don't want to screw anything up.

Hi,

You do need to use the "safely remove Harware Icon" in the taskbar.

You could amage the flashdrive by removing it without doing this as data may be being written to the drive.

On flash drives which have LED's on them the LED's will also normally go out to show that the drive is no longer in use.

I have a Lexar Jump Drive and ALWAYS just pull it out of the USB port when I'm done with it. I've never had a problem ... yet.

Same here, got a Lexar at the moment but had lots of different ones at various times and NEVER done anything else other than just unplug (after all activity has ceased of course!)

What you should do though is go into Device Manager/Disk Drives/Lexar right click on it then Properties/Policies and tick "Optimize for quick removal.

Thank you one and all for your excellent responses. I have a much better grasp of things now.
BTW, the packet the device came in gave very little information other than "plug 'er in."
Thanks again and best of 2006 to you!

Also you should make sure that there is no running applications linked to files on the jump drive when you pull it out.
