Alright honey bunz. ...
What we have here is a typical case of a livin' alone girl on
a quest to getting her darn audio working properly, but
can't afford to hire a "GeekSquad", has little to any
computer skills, and has limited technical vocabulary. Here goes, and I apologize ahead of time because I can't
"talk the talk" or "walk the walk" so be gentle with me and
I'll try to speak the language if you can "dummy up" the
solution to me...;PI recently attempted to put together a lil gaming computer
by myself. (....Whoops!) Here are my stats so far..
CPU=AMD Athlon 64 Proc 4000+
Ram= 1 Gig, need model? ask.
Video Card=nvidia GeForceFX PCX6600GT
MoBo=LanParty nF4
Sound PCI Card= Creative SoundBlaster Live!-24bit...Phew!...need any more info let me know.
Originally the mother board on-board audio never worked
properly, and I wrestled it till I finally just threw my hands
in the air and bought a rather basic PCI-slot soundcard
(refer above).
Now's the fun part.
The sound initially stars fine. I get the cute 'lil boot-up
jingle and everything seems to be working dandy ( I can at
this point go into my ControlPanel, Audio devices and my
"soundblaster" driver is sitting happy in my default audio
driver spot.
Until 1 minute later.
Then the entire system twitches alittle, and next thing I
know, the default audio drivers are all greyed out and I've
got no sound. (Keep in mind it played the start up jingle
just fine.)
Now. If I start up ANY program within this 1-minute post-
boot-up timeframe, the sound WILL play through the
duration of the programs running period. But if that
program is shut down and re-ran, or another program is
ran, there appears to be "no default audio device" and no
sound will play.
Here's another funny part.
Upon discovering that inspite my efforts to run a certain
program before my 1-minute-post-boot-up timeframe
(Which usually involves me clicking madly on the program
icon over and over and praying to whatever deity I can
that it'll boot up before my default sound driver "greys".)
I'll reluctantly try again, shutting down my computer so I
can "restart the timer".....
Get this...the system "shut-down jingle" plays JUST FINE!!!!
....o.O...wth?!
Okay. I've uninstalled, reinstalled, and updated all drivers,
poked at my BIOS settings, reinstalled windows
(twice)...removed the Sound card and restarted the
process over and over again. ect ect ect...No change. My only idea that could be going on is the Windows ( I
believe it's the wINDOWS audio drivers) "Legacy Audio
drivers" are kicking my SoundBlasters drivers
offline....having "conflicts" if you will, but when I go into
my Driver manager and under Audio devices and I try to
remove the Legacy audio drivers manually there is no way
to remove them, whatsoever. There isn't even the option
to "disable". They seem permanently ingrained into my
computers psyche......Translation: "Help!!! u r smart! Sound no workies, u
kno how remove Legacy audio drivers, y? n? maybe?"You'll always find me with one hand down my pants and the other with a wacom tablet pen firmly clutched.......

Dear honey bunz-
Having not read all the great American novel, I wanted to ask--
When using the PCI card, have you gone into BIOS
to disable the onboard sound ??
May have conflicts if both being used.Only thoughts from me, the dirty old man.

:;laughs::Yes, Yes I have. :D
I've gone into the BIOS and disabled the onboard sound,
trying to force it to look for an outside source of audio
but.....
The problem still exists. You'll always find me with one hand down my pants and the other with a wacom tablet pen.......

Chuck 2 is probably right on. After you disable the onboard sound in the bios go to the device manager and uninstall all the drivers, reboot and see if XP will install the legacy drivers or install the drivers for the pci card.
http://computervitals.com/

Maybe go into Device Manager, and remove all references to Sound devices, Then restart.
Upon Windows loading, Windows would ask for drivers again for new hardware.
Then give it what every body wants. HO! HO!

Allright,sooo...
I went in ...disabled the onboard audio in BIOS...and
actully man-handled the Sound card until it was removed.
Booted up Windows.
No sound (obviously because the car wasn't in.
Shut down windows, manhandled the card back into place.
Started up windows.
Windows. "Sup?...oh! yeah..new hardware...want me to
instal a driver?"
Me= "..uh..yeah but, instal it from this disk over here...."...
*directs the hardward driver set up to pull the drivers off
of the CreativeSoundBlaster CD*
Windows= "Great!....alright..done and done...it's ready to
go.."
Me= " Really?!..."
......So I play aroud a bit...and it seems great, multiple
programs with with sound included (miraculous).
But i'm not satisfied.
So I restart.
Windows boots up.
Woudln't you know?! The same problems arise. Again.
Aaaand I'm back where I started. You'll always find me with one hand down my pants and the other with a wacom tablet pen.......

You have a registry problem. Do you have a registry cleaner like regseeker? If so, uninstall all the drivers in device manager again. run regseeker to clean out the residual drivers, reboot and reinstall the creative drivers.
Google to REGSEEKER if you don't have one.http://computervitals.com/

You did not have to remove the card, just do the
Device Manager thing of removing all references to sound in there, and Restart.I hate to rain on your parade, but-
Static electricity from your body can ruin the
electronic components in computers. Are you
using a wrist grounding strap when handling
boards??? Or at least know the correct procedure. And you may be loaded with all sorts of sparks.
Sign, Hornier by the minute.

Actually I DID recently install "RegistryFix".
I'll go and dump the drivers again ect....and give it all
another try...I'll let you know what happens. You'll always find me with one hand down my pants and the other with a wacom tablet pen.......

Registryfix may not do it. Use regseeker and see what you get. It's free.
http://computervitals.com/

:;laughs:: yes..yes yes..I am manhandling it with extreme
care..( I use the term man-handling very lightly..)
.I understand the static electricity issues, and have taken the
correct precautionary measures to avoid giving my comptuer
a good *zap* :DSo no need to rain on any parades. heh.
Alright, Regseeker it is, per.
You'll always find me with one hand down my pants and the other with a wacom tablet pen.......

LOL....so it IS true what they say about tech guys. :P
... Well..that is a massive and tremendous "IF" we can get
this baby working. ...
So far I've:
Downloaded Regseeker.
Uninstalled the drivers (what drivers that WHERE able to be
uninstalled, dug around for their hiding bits and pieces..)
Ran Regseeker through multiple times...
Cleared all the potential problems that I could see......
Reinstalled the Cards specific drivers........and........ Well....let me rinse and repeat that whole
process one more time before I proceed in tossing my
computer upon a nearby freeway. You'll always find me with one hand down my pants and the other with a wacom tablet pen.......

Unfortunatly, nothing still seems to be working quite so
well........And even MORE unfortunate is the fact that I had
made some prior arrangements with a few girlfriends of
mine to go out and see a movie tonight... >.<.That said, if any TERRIBLY paitent (preferably one who
speaks english instead of: F3@R M3H H@XXOR S
[<1LLZ!!!...), runs across this message and feels pity for
the "poor little incompetent gamer", I would be GREATLY
GREATLY appreciative if I could get more help on this.Sayonara...and brb after the movie..
(If you'd rather help me out in email, that's fine as well, I
believe my username has a link to that info, yes?..yes.) if
not, I'll keep watching this thread.THANKS SO MUCH!!
You'll always find me with one hand down my pants and the other with a wacom tablet pen.......

I hate to disagree with some of the people above, but...
You 'can' have 'multiple' sound cards (adapters) installed in a PC. There is a place in the Control Panel to select which one to use at any particular time. It might be in Multimedia. I'm not using XP right now, so I can't give explicit instructions.

For me that would be a VERY high end system and I would find out why my onboard sound does not work. Did you install the onboard driver from the motherboard cd? You paid a lot of money for that board I would make them take care of it.
Do you use the 64 bit XP operating system? If you do and you still want to use the sb pci card look here for the updated driver for XP 64 bit edition.
It also says on the website to install the software before the card and only install card when prompted.
Also you might try the other pci slot there might be irc conflicts with that one.

I was under the impression that SB cards don't like having drivers installed by 'pointing' the prompt for drivers to the CD. They need that cancelled, and the setup prog run from the CD instead? Then a reboot of course, but I'd certainly try a different slot.
In the bios bootup screen, it should also tell you which IRQ it's trying to use and whether it is sharing with any other cards or devices. If you don't see the summary, you may need to switch off the boot logo option or similar in the bios.
You could try removing all other cards, and disabling as much onboard as possible - get it working, then re-enable things one at a time until the conflict starts again.
You could also try looking in the control panel, administrative tools, event viewer. Check the 3 logs in there for error messages.
Just a few thoughts...

There may also be a problem with conflicting drivers. If its happening a minute or so after start up it's possible Windows XP is trying to install some of it's own components. After start up do you see the hardware installing icon on the stat bar?
One thing worth trying is to Right click on My Computer (well yours not actually mine) and select properties. Go to the Hardware tab and select Windows Update. Then just make sure that the Never Download Drivers from Windows Update and click OK. This will stop Windows from installing any other drivers. Now uninstall your sound card and reinstall it (again) If you get the problem again you know it's not a driver version problem.
If this does not work look in Control Panel -Administrative Tools and Event Viewer. See if there are any entries in Application or System. If there is post it here and we will have a look and see if we can make any more sense of it!
There are some motherboard problems that can cause this but we'll leave that till later!
