Comment:

Recently the explorer bar on the left side of the window that has always been there has gone missing for an unknown reason. You know, the bar that has the quick links like "My Network Places","My Computer","My Documents","Control Panel", etc., and shows file details and thumbnails that is in the spot where the Search Companion comes up when you are trying to search for files on your computer. I have gone to view and there is no option that brings the bar back, nor is there one in the folder options, at least that I can find. If anyone has any insight please offer it, this bar is definetly missed. Thank you.

It's not in IE, its in the regular explorer, to view files on the computer or browse a network.

Hi Brennan

Try this...

Run REGEDIT and go to...
HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main

Look on right hand screen

Delete "Explorer Bar" if you have it there

Then reboot

Good luck

That value is not there. I must repeat myself one more time, it is NOT in Internet Explorer, it is in the Windows Explorer, the one that is used to view files on your computer. If you need an example of what I am talking about, click "My Computer" and there you have it.

Ah! In Windows Explorer:
The 'Folders' section is missing?

Have you pressed F11 to get 'Full-Screen' mode?

If you can see the 'Back' button, then rightclick it if it's active. If not rightclick a button on the same toolbar that IS active. Select "Customize" from the rightclick-menu, and then find out where the "Folders" button is and Add it to the 'current toolbar buttons' and then close to apply. Now find the "Folders" button on the menu and click on it. You should now have your left pane back.

If you always open Windows Explorer from the "My Computer" icon, then it's possible that the icon got reconfigured somehow to only show the contents of a particular folder.

Press WinKey+E (=The Microsoft LogoFlag-Key +E) to start WindowsExplorer normally.

That's almost what I'm trying to do. I'm glad someone is finally on the same page as me regarding what exactly I'm talking about. But the bar that is missing isn't any of the ones listed, nor in the customize options. I really don't know what to call it, but what I can say is that it has a blue background kinda, and 3 different boxes. One lists links to common folders such as, "My Computer", "My Documents","Control Panel","My Network Places", etc. And the bottom box shows file details whenever you click on a file. I believe that this bar is defaultly on from a fresh install of the operating system.

Find the "Folders" button on the menu and turn it off. It will alternate between the "Common Tasks" if that's enabled:
ControlPanel>FolderOptions>General Page
Select "Show Common Tasks" in Folders. It's probably using the 'Windows classic folders' setting right now.

You are perfectly right. Thank you so much, I'm surprised that I could have missed that. I will make sure next time I have a problem with something that I can't figure out to post it and hopefully you will notice it. Thanks again!!

Last week, I spent 5 to 10 minutes searching through all the kitchen-drawers for a knife I was holding in my hand the whole time!!

So it may be wise to temper your optimism about me finding anything you overlooked !:)
