If you are working in Windows, there is a Win32 distribution of Latex called MikTex. There is a package wizard that helps you configure and update packages to your Latex installation. As far as text editors are cocerned, there are two great LaTex text editors that I would recommend for windows : 1) WinTex2000 2) WinEdt


Both of these ease a lot of trouble for you Latexing work.
