How about CDs? What type of DVDs won't play? Just movies or is it all DVD disks such as game disks or software install disks etc?
How old is the machine?
Have you run a lenscleaner through it? Is it also a burner and do you use it a lot?

How about bootable disks? Will they boot and read properly before the operating system starts up? Cannot tell from what little information you provided whether you have a hardware or software problem.

Which software are you using? Are you sure your Codec files are up to date? Try installing the latest XP Codec Pack:

Or try VLC Media Player:

You drop the laptop and the dvd goes bad?

1/3 of highway deaths are caused by drunks. The rest are by people who can't drive any better than a drunk.

@Richard59- There is no such thing as a "DVD disk". Disk and disc are two different things.

@verdammt- Are you sure your optical drive is made to read DVDs? You may only have a drive that only reads CDs.
