my friend gave me this laptop he's had for 3 years. it's a Syntax valuebook model no. A535 has 1gb ram and 30 gb hard drive. once you hit the power button, al that happens is the cd rom light comes on, then you hear it spinning down. and that repeats. NOTHING comes on the monitor, and it doesn't beep or anything. the only noise is the fan, and the cdrom reving up and down (there is no cd in the drive) any suggestions?

Sounds like it may be a motherboard issue.

It's 'possible' that the a dead battery would cause that. 'Some' laptops will only work on AC if the battery is not completely dead.

did you try tapping f8 on bootup to see if you could get in to safe mode?

Also, You can also try putting an XP install disc in to see if the laptop will boot from it.
Make sure to use an XP home or Pro cd....WHICHEVER one is loaded in the laptop. You can't mix & match

Another thing to try is get into the bios and reset the defaults and see if that works.

Some HELP in posting on Computing.net plus free progs and instructions Cheers

Well the problem is that nothin even comes on the monitor. and it almost seems like it's stuck in a boot loop. almost like it goes to boot for 2 seconds but restarts and repeats infinitaley. as far as i know this unit has never been dropped and was kept on a bay on his desk.
