Comment:

I just installed XP on an old laptop which originally had Windows 2000. Now every now and then it keeps shutting down to prevent damage and beginning a dump of physical memory. Could this be down to the fact that there is only a 5 gig hard drive and 128 mb of RAM?

You've not told us the processor speed. But Win XP has 128Mb as minimum requirement, so you should install Wwin XP on something higher...

It would be unlikely that xp is causing that because of the ram exactly. You should look at the event viewer logs first for clues. If there is not any info there then you have to diag the dump logs. I'd suspect a driver issue or even bios may have issues or even some video memory use of the system ram.

I'd 2000 worked well then XP isn't that much different. I would not upgrade a working 2000 unless there is a very real need. The XP cd has a way to help you decide if your system may work with XP.
