Laptop turns itself off

OS: WinXP Home Edition
CPU/Ram: P4 Celeron

Appears to be starting up normally. desktop appears, cursor moves, no messages to suggest a problem. Appears to be addressing the hard drive for another 6 minutes. Screen then goes black and it turns itself off. There are no message of any sort at any point in the process.

Usually when a laptop shuts down for no apparent reason, it's because it's running on low battery.

Check your power supply and make sure it's pumping out the proper voltage. Check the plug both on the power supply and on the laptop for secure connection

Take the battery pack out and see if the machine runs on the power supply alone while putting heavy demand on the cpu.

also check you power option settings and make sure they are correct.
