Hi. I'm not sure why my laptop keeps crashing on me. I can start it up, it takes a while (longer than a full minute) to get from the Microsoft Windows XP screen to the user login - then takes another minute to two to access the user profile and bring me to the regular desktop screen.

Sometimes within a few minutes - at other times taking around 30+ - it shuts down. Not standby or hibernate. No lights are active. I've changed the power settings so that it isn't supposed to shut off.

Then when it does come back on, none of my settings are saved. McAfee VirusScan is disabled at logon, regardless of whether I previously activated it.

I have uninstalled the .NET Framework (I was told that may have been a cause) and have attempted virus scans, but the laptop always shuts down less than ten minutes into the scan.

This happens whether AC or DC powered.

Do I need to get a new power supply?

Thanks for reading. Any help is appreciated.

hb2k, may be wrong. My gut tells you have a nasty at work. Know you say you've done a virus scan. Think I'd do another. A different one this time. There're several good, free online ones. Pick the one you like best @:

Could also be a Trojan. Be aware that a virus and a Trojan are similar, but not the same. Many times, an AV detects one it can't clean , other times, it gets missed entirely.
If you need to clean one, A² can do the job and you can get it free @:

among other places.
If it turns out that you need to use it, be sure to update prior to running. They just released a new update recently and it changes all the time. Things are in a constant state of flux.
HTH.
