Laptop screen goes dim after unplugging

My laptop screen goes dim unless its plugged in.

look at your power settings [control panel/power]

You may need to change some of the video settings when on battery.

The screen is supposed to go dim when it's running on the battery to conserve power. If you boot into BIOS, you probably have options for brightness when plugged in and when running on the battery. When your computer restarts, press F12 (or whatever key it mentions to enter Setup) at the manufacturer's logo, which is before the Windows logo.
