Laptop screen backlight shuts off starting XP

Sony / Pcg-k315s

Specs: Windows XP, 3ghz / 1gb
Vaio PCG-K315s LCD backlight shuts off as soon as XP starts to load, but works perfectly if Dos is the OS or a bootable CD is in use, Hirens for example.
If an external monitor is used, then XP can be viewed without issue.
The LCD is new and I've exchanged the screen inverter but to no avail. The system BIOS is the latest and the graphics driver (ATI Mobility Radeon 9200) comes from Sony's support site.
Any assistance will be most welcome.

It sounds like Windows thinks another monitor is plugged in all the time. Have you tried pressing the function key that switches internal/external monitor?
Thanks, Paul MCS Help

The function key works to toggle through the screen options, you can even see a faint image on the LCD under the appropriate choise, but the backlight is always turned off under XP.
Like I said, if I install DOS then all is dandy!
