I have this laptop about a year and a half old. It was given to me by a friend who had trouble with it. It will go through the Dell flash page and start to boot windows and then goes to the blue screen with the following message: Unmountable_Boot_volume. At the bottom of the page lit gives the Technical information ***Stop: 0X000000ED (0X82D62900,0XC0000006,0X00000000,0X00000000)
I ran a diagnostic and came up with the following: DSI Short Test -Fail
Error code1000-0146
Msg: unit 0: IDE status failed.
Status Byte=5e control code=1Msg=no additional sense information. This makes no sense to me. I tried to get help from the Dell website and got nowhere. I contacted Dell. No help at all. Also, I don't have any Boot or recovery discs as they didn't come with the computer. Any help you can give me will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks,

Thanks for the help everybody. I went to the links that were posted and they were a great help. However, I don't have any of the discs needed. They didn't come with the computer. I have recovery discs for other computers but they won't work on the Dell. Any suggestions?

It sounds like a hard drive problem. You could download a diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer's web site. It might tell you if the drive is ok or dead.
It might be just a connection problem between the drive and the motherboard. you could try reseating the drive.

Have you tried system restore?
Can you get into safe mode?
Try System Restore, I have had good results using this way or Safe Mode, different to Last Known Good Configuration in Safe Mode.

System Restore is accessed the following way:
1. It's a good practice to shut down all other applications before using System Restore, as it requires a full-system reboot to complete the installation. Connecting to the internet is not required, however. So shut all applications. Then click "Start."
2. Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Then the program will load.
Or,
If System Restore doesn't work in Normal Mode, it might work in Safe Mode.
Toggle F8 or Press Ctrl ( depends on your comp ) during bootup ( just before, verifying DMI pool, message comes on )
Select Safe Mode.

thanks for the Help. According to the Microsoft links above they take me to the exact problem and tell me how to correct it. It is a cache problem that is locking me out. I need a Boot disc to start up the computer and then do a chkdsk /r to get it restored. I can't get it to boot and Dell is being a real pain in the butt. I hope someone can point me in the right direction to find a disc. Windows is on the computer all I need is to get it started. You guys are great. I have been searching for the answer to my problem for about a week and come on this site and have the answer in less then an hour. Thanks again!

If I've inadvertantly bumped my laptop's Wi-Fi switch to "on", my Sony VAIO won't boot. And no, to date, Sony's not offering so much as a sorry, let alone a fix to resolve that bug.

You guys don't know how much I appreciate your help. Thanks to the information I received from the links I received above I knew what I had to do. I borrowed a Vista reinstall disc from a friend. I figured the worst I could do is to install Vista. When I Booted from the disc, there was a "Repair" button on the disc. I pushed "repair" and the computer went crazy. About two minutes later, Windows XP booted up and it has been running great ever since. Thanks to all of you. Dell still insists that they don't have the discs but they offered me XP Professional for a mere $289.00 . Saturday I will be writing to the President of Dell and I have been saving all the communications from Dell. They will never sell me a computer. Thanks again. My problem has been solved.
