Alright, I have this laptop. And I've had it for about 4-5 months. And it's worked fine except for the last month and a half or so. One day all the sudden it started lagging real bad and I couldn't fix it. So, I formatted and then a few days later it would start doing it again and then when it would try to boot up I would get a blue screen of death.. and the only way to get passed that was to run the recovery console on the XP installation disk and run 'fixboot' and then it would boot up. But, does anyone have any idea why it would lag like this I've had to format like 5 times. It's not because of virus' or anything because. I have Norton up-to-date and spybot and ad-aware pro. It kind of seems like a hardware issue to me but, any help would be appreciated

If it's a hardware problem, It's not likely that a format reinstall would temporarily fix the problem.
Is your anti-virus up-to-date? Are you running a firewall?
Are you using P2P software?

I would guess it's either a problem with the drive, or with the ram sticks(s).

Maybe the laptop is overheating and slowing down? I've had this happen with a desktop computer before.

Memory tests
Memtest has an ISO for creating a CD
http://memtest86.com/
or
Docmem
http://downloads-zdnet.com.com/3001-2094-1534814.html

You could also run chkdsk /r
This will check the disk for bad sectors

You're not trying to play any Sony audio CDs are you?.... had a friend with the same symptoms as you after trying to play a CD from Sony and of course the ol' Sony rootkit off an audio CD was to blame.

oh, and if not that, it sounds like the lappy is working fine until you install certain software. Anything new being installed or any recent updates to software?

Download a diagnostic from the hard drive manufacturer's web site.
