grateful forhelp with my daughter's laptop. she cannot get online via wireless router. briefly it seems that her laptop IP address has been altered which enables her to use the router. does every pc have its own manufacture IP? I assumed that an IP address is provided by an internet server. IT people have looked at it and it seems that a reformat is the only option to restore the machine's unique IP. Is this correct? Is there no way to restore it thru the BIOS or something w/o a complete reformat. The laptop is OEM !! Would the windows repair option not fix it?? ive never had to reformat myself so cant really help. Am looking for a simple solution. Is there one?? she is 20 miles away and cant give advice. if anyone has come across this b4 plz get in touch. I will provide all the info u need.

If a router is being used then most likely it is the router which will provide the IP addresses for each PC that is connected to it (wired or wirelessly). This IP address is the LAN end of the router. The router has its own IP address (WAN end) that it uses to connect to the internet which is provided by the ISPs. The ISPs DHCP server may be configured to provide a fixed or dynamic IP address.

The IP address provided depends on how the local router is configured. The DHCP server within the router either provides IP addresses to connected PCs dynamically or in a fixed way.

Each DHCP client (PC) on connecting to the router (i.e. on power up) gets an IP address dished to it by the routers DHCP server that usually looks like 192.168.0.x where x starts from 100.

I hope this helps you to understand the problem better.

Hi All,

Below is a text from my daughter regarding my first post:

"Here's
what my
laptop keeps telling me when i try and REPAIR the wireless internet
connection:-

Renewing IP address (which stays on for about 10 minutes),then...
Unable to clear ARP cache

We have tried millions of times to IPconfig/renew,relase,flushdns etc
and my
laptop just won't have it.I also tried the Winsock program which had no
effect.

When I try to connect to the sky wireless internet,it will say
"acquiring
network address" and then "disconnected" and will flash between the two
constantly.

Do you know anyone who will know whats going on with it?Mikes got
really fed
up and frustrated with it now because he can't work out what is wrong
with
it and has got to the point where he thinks reformatting it is the only
way
that the IP address thing may possibly be sorted out!!
HELP!!!!"

Could it be as simple as a Disabled Service in Windows xp maybe?

I have never come across your problem therefore I cannot really help you. However,
here are a few URLs for you to look at:

Microsoft Support - How to Troubleshoot Basic TCP/IP Problems

Microsoft Documentation (XP) - Arp

Computer Exchange - Unable to Flush the ARP cache

On the above page scroll down pass the view solution button. It is a trick to make you think that you have to subscribe (don't click the view solution buttons). If you scroll down further you will see the rest of the thread.

They got it workin for a short time only. They uninstalled network card reinstalled with updated drivers. Worked fine for a while. Now the laptop only works when physically connected via cable. here is copy of daughter's email today with the possible cause. What should she do now?
thanx anyone.

[quote][i][size=18]Hey dad,
Heres what happened,
wireless and internet was working fine as it should be.Already had
avast
antivirus installed on laptop and was working fine. Mike installed AVG
7.5
onto laptop and ZoneAlarm Pro 14 day trial came automatically with it
and
installed.Window popped up with a message and said the antivirus was
conflicting.
Turned on the laptop, wireless and MSN messenger was set to come on
automatically.2 Zone alarm windows popped up in the corner of the
screen.
One said, "MSN messenger is trying to connect and download from
internet,
ALLOW/DENY"
The other said,"New network connection detected,ALLOW/DENY"
I tried to click ALLOW for both but at the point my laptop just
completely
crashed and froze.
Had To <Ctrl-Alt-Del> to end all tasks and then restart the computer.
Once the computer restarted, I tried to connect to wireless internet
connection by going to "View available wireless networks", however, it
just
keeps saying "No wireless signals available in range"

Mike has tried to uninstall and reinstall LAN card by getting all
Ralink
RT2500 drivers from the internet but it had no affect. He also tried to
release and renew my IP address by run-cmd etc. but this didn't work
either.
However I can still connect to the internet if I plug the ethernet
cable
into the router and into my laptop.

Can anyone please help????!!!!!

First of all, only 1 Antivirus can be used at a time so I would suggest Avast which you said was working fine already.
I would drop the Zone alarm trial and use Comodo which is totally free for homeowners and works great.
You must really trust this Mike guy...LOL I can's see why he would install AVG when Avast was already working fine.
Have you tried the LSP fix in Response 1? It may work for you and may be what you need. Good luck

Hopefully my advice will help you...Please post back with your results....thanks
